Saturday 1th September 2001

From to Braunston Top Lock No 6 arriving at 12:15 am. The time taken was 3 hours 0 minutes. 4.75 miles and 7 locks, averaging 3.92 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 577 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 990 locks, averaging 1.89 lock/miles per hour.

Came up the Buckby locks with Stroller, from Titchmarsh. A lot of boats were coming down. Beryl did some shopping at the farm shop on the way. Stopped for water (20 minutes) at the top lock. Came through Braunston Tunnel, passing three boats, and moored before the top lock. Had lunch at the Admiral Nelson (Veggie Chilli 6.20, Chicken Chasseur 7.30).

From Braunston Top Lock No 6 to Braunston Junction arriving at 3:45 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 35 minutes. 1.25 miles and 6 locks, averaging 4.58 lock/miles per hour. Came down the Braunston flight with Poppy, a 55 foot narrowboat. Stopped for 20 minutes at Braunston Boats to pick up the new refrigerator, which Justin Green helped me unpack and load. Came round on to the North Oxford and moored just after bridge 90. Did some shopping in the village. A day of sunshine and cloud with one or two light showers.

Sunday 2th September 2001

From Braunston Junction to Brownsover Arm (disused) arriving at 12:45 am. The time taken was 3 hours 40 minutes. 9.87 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.51 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 582 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 999 locks, averaging 1.89 lock/miles per hour.

A lot of boats on the move today and a bit a of a queue at Hillmorton Locks but we made good time down the flight following Windrush, from Napton. Stopped just before Masters Bridge, No 58, and went to the Pizza Hut for lunch then on to Homebase and Focus DIY for a towel grip and torch battery.

From Brownsover Arm (disused) to Easenhall Lane Bridge No 34 arriving at 4:50 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 35 minutes. 4.87 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3.08 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 583 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 999 locks, averaging 1.88 lock/miles per hour.

Moored a little way before the bridge, on the last spare piece of piling. A mostly cloudy day with a few showers.

Monday 3th September 2001

From Easenhall Lane Bridge No 34 to Ansty Bridge No 14 arriving at 11:33 am. The time taken was 1 hour 40 minutes. 4.25 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.55 lock/miles per hour. Saw several working boats today including Ivor Batchelor on Mountbatten and Trevor Maggs on Corona. Stopped on Ansty visitor mooring for lunch.

From Ansty Bridge No 14 to Sutton Stop Lock arriving at 4:15 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 45 minutes. 3.75 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.29 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 587 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1001 locks, averaging 1.87 lock/miles per hour.

Saw Fred on Wigrams Turn on the way down to the junction. Stopped for water (15 minutes) then went through the lock and turned to moor on the visitor moorings. A cloudy day with sunny periods and some light showers.

Tuesday 4th September 2001

From Sutton Stop Lock to Newbold Tunnel (South-east end) arriving at 12:50 am. The time taken was 3 hours 45 minutes. 11.5 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3.07 lock/miles per hour. A lot of stretches covered in duck weed between Ansty and Stretton. Moored on the visitor moorings and went to the Barley Mow for lunch (Vegetable Moussaka 5.25, Liver & Bacon 4.95 less 25% discount - I don't know why). While we were at lunch Fred and Joyce arrived so we went to see them on Wigrams Turn.

From Newbold Tunnel (South-east end) to Brownsover Arm (disused) arriving at 5:20 pm. The time taken was 30 minutes. 1.37 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.74 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 591 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1001 locks, averaging 1.86 lock/miles per hour.

Moved on to moor just before the arm and bridge, ready for shopping in the morning. A dry cool day with sunshine and cloud.

Wednesday 5th September 2001

From Brownsover Arm (disused) to Braunston Bottom Lock No 1 arriving at 1:20 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 40 minutes. 10.62 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.71 lock/miles per hour. Had a call from Dad early this morning to say Mum had a heart attack. We went shopping at Tesco's before setting off and then went non stop to Braunston. Beryl stayed on the boat, which was due to be lifted out and blacked, while I set off for Colchester. A day of sunshine and cloud.

Friday 14th September 2001

From Braunston Bottom Lock No 1 to Braunston Junction arriving at 2:30 pm. The time taken was 25 minutes. 0.75 miles and 0 locks, averaging 1.8 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 595 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1004 locks, averaging 1.85 lock/miles per hour.

We returned to the boat after six days away. Paid Justin Green for repacking the stern tube (10) and set off down to Midland Chandlers. Ivor Batchalor was not in his usual place so we did not get any diesel and there were two boats on the pumpout at Braunston Marina so we did not stop. Bought some more Elsan Blue, a couple of fenders and Waterways World.

From Braunston Junction to Braunston Bottom Lock No 1 arriving at 3:05 pm. The time taken was 20 minutes. 0.75 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.25 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 595 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1004 locks, averaging 1.85 lock/miles per hour.

Came back to Braunston Marina but there were still two boats on the pumpout so we moored just past the entrance and went shopping in the village. Managed to get into the marina later in the afternoon to get a pumpout (5) and gas (13.50). A sunny day.

Saturday 15th September 2001

From Braunston Bottom Lock No 1 to Whilton Bottom Lock No 13 arriving at 2:15 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 20 minutes. 5.25 miles and 13 locks, averaging 4.21 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 600 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1017 locks, averaging 1.86 lock/miles per hour.

Came up Braunston Locks with some novice boaters on a Napton hire boat. Stopped for water at Buckby top lock (25 minutes) then went down the flight by ourselves. Stopped at the bottom for lunch and bought a new set of three mooring ropes at Whilton Marina (16 each).

From Whilton Bottom Lock No 13 to Stowe Hill Bridge No 26 arriving at 5:00 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 20 minutes. 4.25 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3.19 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 601 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1017 locks, averaging 1.86 lock/miles per hour.

Moored before the bridge. A cool day of sunshine and cloud.

Sunday 16th September 2001

From Stowe Hill Bridge No 26 to Rothersthorpe Lock No 12 arriving at 12:40 am. The time taken was 4 hours 5 minutes. 8.12 miles and 12 locks, averaging 4.93 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 605 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1029 locks, averaging 1.86 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped for diesel at Gayton Marina (63 litres for 22.06, 35p a litre). Went down the locks and stopped before lock 13 for lunch. Met two boats coming up.

From Rothersthorpe Lock No 12 to Northampton Junction arriving at 3:15 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 45 minutes. 3.25 miles and 5 locks, averaging 4.71 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 607 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1034 locks, averaging 1.87 lock/miles per hour.

Came down the rest of the GU Northampton Branch and on to the Nene. Did not stop.

From Northampton Junction to Cogenhoe Lock No 7 arriving at 6:25 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 10 minutes. 6.25 miles and 6 locks, averaging 3.87 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 610 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1040 locks, averaging 1.87 lock/miles per hour.

Saw the narrowboat Kingfisher, from the Great Ouse, moored above Abington Lock. Weston Favel Lock had to be left with the guillotine gate down for some reason, not the easiest operation as there is no proper landing stage below the lock. Saw a kingfisher between Billing and Cogenhoe. Moored just before the lock. A mostly sunny day with cloud and a fresh wind this morning.

Monday 17th September 2001

From Cogenhoe Lock No 7 to Wellingborough Bridge arriving at 12:35 am. The time taken was 3 hours 40 minutes. 6.62 miles and 7 locks, averaging 3.71 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 614 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1047 locks, averaging 1.87 lock/miles per hour.

As we set off I said hello to the man on the hotel boat Leonora, which was moored next to us at Cogenhoe. We found that both Whiston and Woolaston locks had been electrified since we came up the Nene. Moored by the park and went to Tesco's cafe for drinks and sandwiches then did our shopping.

From Wellingborough Bridge to Irthlingborough Bridge arriving at 4:30 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 15 minutes. 5.25 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.67 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 616 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1050 locks, averaging 1.87 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped for water on the Nene Park moorings (15 minutes) then moved a little way down to moor for the night. We had hoped to try the Seasons Bistro but it is not open on Monday nights. A sunny start but a mostly cloudy day with a few spots of rain that never came to be a real shower.

Tuesday 18th September 2001

From Irthlingborough Bridge to Wadenhoe Lock No 24 arriving at 1:35 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 35 minutes. 13 miles and 7 locks, averaging 4.36 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 621 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1057 locks, averaging 1.86 lock/miles per hour.

Came through all the locks with the narrowboat "Kingfisher" from Popes Corner, who had moored beside us last night. We had hoped to stay for an evening meal at the King's Head but they were not serving dinner on Mondays or Tuesdays. Had lunch on the boat before setting off.

From Wadenhoe Lock No 24 to Upper Barnwell Lock No 26 arriving at 4:15 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 50 minutes. 3.5 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.55 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 622 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1060 locks, averaging 1.86 lock/miles per hour.

Saw several Great Creasted Grebes between Lilord and Barnwell, including some young. Moored below the lock and went to the Mill for dinner. A dull and breezy day with some light rain.

Wednesday 19th September 2001

From Upper Barnwell Lock No 26 to Peterborough Bridge arriving at 5:00 pm. The time taken was 8 hours 5 minutes. 26 miles and 11 locks, averaging 4.58 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 631 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1071 locks, averaging 1.86 lock/miles per hour.

Saw a dabchick before Ashton Lock. Caught up with "Kingfisher" again at Warmington Lock and came through all the rest of the locks with them. Stopped at the Boathouse and had dinner there. Rosemary and Tony, from Kingfisher, sat at the next table and we chatted about boating. A dull day with some showers.

Thursday 20th September 2001

From Peterborough Bridge to Peterborough Junction arriving at 10:30 am. The time taken was 40 minutes. 0.5 miles and 0 locks, averaging 0.75 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 631 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1071 locks, averaging 1.85 lock/miles per hour.

Spent 40 minutes trying to get a satisfactory pumpout at the embankment but the power seemed to be lacking. Arrived home to end our voyages for this year.
