Monday 1th April 2002

From to Ashton Lock No 28 arriving at 5:55 pm. The time taken was 9 hours 20 minutes. 24.12 miles and 9 locks, averaging 3.55 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 9 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 24.12 miles and 9 locks, averaging 3.55 lock/miles per hour.

Saw two kingfishers before Orton Lock and two more between Wansford Bridge and the lock. Also saw a Green Woodpecker just before Alwarton Lock. We went through Alwarton Lock with the Narrowboat "Necessity" who's steerer is related to Mike and Jenny. At Water Newton Lock we met a couple on "Hawkeye" from March. Moored just above the lock. A dry day with some sun and wind.

Tuesday 2th April 2002

From Ashton Lock No 28 to Irthlingborough Lock No 17 arriving at 5:30 pm. The time taken was 8 hours 5 minutes. 18.37 miles and 11 locks, averaging 3.63 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 17 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 42.5 miles and 20 locks, averaging 3.59 lock/miles per hour.

Changed the awkard inside belt before setting off this morning. Saw several Great Creasted Grebes, one in Oundle Marina. Saw two llamas at Lilford. Had lunch on the move between Wadenhoe and Titchmarsh. Shared the last four locks with a couple on the narrowboat Andante, from Titchmarsh. A mainly dry day, just a short light shower, and some sunshine after a misty start.

From Irthlingborough Lock No 17 to Wellingborough Bridge arriving at 11:00 am. The time taken was 2 hours 30 minutes. 5.75 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.9 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 19 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 48.25 miles and 24 locks, averaging 3.63 lock/miles per hour.

Went through the new mitre gates at Higham Lock but it took 193 turns to lift one paddle, which is even worse than the usual 75 to 80 turns to lift Nene paddles. The overhang of the cantilevers look dangerous but the protective work has not been done on these yet. Moored and went shopping at Tesco's before lunch.

From Wellingborough Bridge to Cogenhoe Lock No 7 arriving at 5:25 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 55 minutes. 6.62 miles and 7 locks, averaging 3.48 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 23 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 54.87 miles and 31 locks, averaging 3.6 lock/miles per hour.

Saw two oyster catchers just past Wellingborough Lock. The guillotine gate at Whiston was leaking badly and we had to lift both paddles to fill the lock. Moored imediately above the lock at Cogenhoe. A warm sunny day.

Thursday 4th April 2002

From Cogenhoe Lock No 7 to Northampton Junction arriving at 11:50 am. The time taken was 3 hours 20 minutes. 6.25 miles and 6 locks, averaging 3.68 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 27 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 61.12 miles and 37 locks, averaging 3.61 lock/miles per hour.

Saw a kingfisher above Clifford Hill Lock. Met two narrowboats coming out of Weston Favell Lock as we went in. Three children helped us through Northampton Lock. Did not stop at the junction but came straight onto the GU Northampton Arm.

From Northampton Junction to Rothersthorpe Lock No 12 arriving at 2:00 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 10 minutes. 3.25 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.81 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 29 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 64.37 miles and 42 locks, averaging 3.63 lock/miles per hour.

There seems to be more new housing along the arm every year. A lot of weed as usual. Stopped for lunch just above Lock 13.

From Rothersthorpe Lock No 12 to Railway Bridge (Euston to Crewe main line) arriving at 5:25 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 35 minutes. 2 miles and 12 locks, averaging 5.42 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 31 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 66.37 miles and 54 locks, averaging 3.77 lock/miles per hour.

Just after Lock 12 on the Northampton Arm we found a couple in a new narrowboat who were having trouble with the gears. It turned out to be a loose cable fixing. Saw a Calcutt hire boat at the top of the flight. Moored just after bridge 49. Went to the Blisworth Arms Hotel for dinner (Curries 6.99 each). A warm sunny day.

Friday 5th April 2002

From Railway Bridge (Euston to Crewe main line) to Grafton Bridge No 57 arriving at 12:20 am. The time taken was 3 hours 0 minutes. 5.62 miles and 7 locks, averaging 4.21 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 34 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 72 miles and 61 locks, averaging 3.81 lock/miles per hour.

Very wet through Blisworth Tunnel. Stopped at Stoke Bruerne top lock for water (20 minutes) and went down the flight alone. Passed five boats comming up so al the locks were in our favour. Stopped for lunch etc between bridges 56 and 57. A day of misty sunshine and a cool breeze.

Saturday 6th April 2002

From Grafton Bridge No 57 to Willen Bridge No 81 arriving at 12:40 am. The time taken was 4 hours 15 minutes. 11.12 miles and 1 locks, averaging 2.85 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 39 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 83.12 miles and 62 locks, averaging 3.71 lock/miles per hour.

A lot of Canaltime and Wyvern boats about today as well as private boats. Went into Milton Keynes centre and had lunch at Bella Pasta then did some shopping. A sunny day with a cold wind.

From Willen Bridge No 81 to Orchard Mill Bridge No 102 arriving at 12:55 am. The time taken was 2 hours 30 minutes. 6.87 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.15 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 41 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 90 miles and 63 locks, averaging 3.67 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped for water at Pear Tree Bridge (20 minutes) and at Willowbridge Marina (20 minutes) for an aluminium widlas for Beryl (13.95) and 116.94 litres of diesel at 28p per litre. Stopped for lunch a little way after the bridge.

From Orchard Mill Bridge No 102 to Leighton Buzzard Bridge No 114 arriving at 5:35 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 55 minutes. 5.5 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.6 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 44 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 95.5 miles and 68 locks, averaging 3.67 lock/miles per hour.

Came through Stoke Hammond and Soulbury Locks with the narrowboat Brass Farthing which a couple were delivering to Hemel Hempstead from Wakefield. A sunny day.

Monday 8th April 2002

From Leighton Buzzard Bridge No 114 to Chedington Bridge No 126 arriving at 1:20 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 50 minutes. 6.62 miles and 9 locks, averaging 4.07 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 48 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 77 locks, averaging 3.66 lock/miles per hour.

Met a few boats coming down as we went up the locks, including a man travelling single handed to Manchester for the Comonwealth Games. Stopped just before the bridge and went for lunch at the Duke of Wellington (Vegtable Curry 5.45, Chicken Curry 6.25) very good.

From Chedington Bridge No 126 to Marsworth Junction arriving at 3:35 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 0 minutes. 1.5 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.5 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 49 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 79 locks, averaging 3.62 lock/miles per hour.

Came up the last two locks and moored at the junction. A sunny day with some cloudy patches and a cool breeze.

From Marsworth Junction to Cowroast Lock No 46 (Summit Lock) arriving at 12:15 am. The time taken was 2 hours 55 minutes. 3.87 miles and 7 locks, averaging 3.73 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 52 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 86 locks, averaging 3.55 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped for water at Marsworth Junction (15 minutes) then set off up the locks. Shared all but the first with a woman alone on her boat. Saw a kingfisher just past Tring Station. Moored for lunch and had a look in the marina chandlery.

From Cowroast Lock No 46 (Summit Lock) to Northchurch Bottom Lock No 52 arriving at 3:40 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 25 minutes. 2.25 miles and 7 locks, averaging 3.83 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 54 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 93 locks, averaging 3.53 lock/miles per hour.

At Cowroast Lock we met a Napton Hire boat on the homeward leg of the Thames Ring. BW were working on the towpath and dredging as we came down the Northchurch Locks. We moored near Waitrose and went to collect the post and do some shopping. A mostly cool and cloudy day.

Wednesday 10th April 2002

From Northchurch Bottom Lock No 52 to Winkwell Bottom Lock No 61 arriving at 4:30 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 55 minutes. 3.12 miles and 9 locks, averaging 4.16 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 57 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 102 locks, averaging 3.5 lock/miles per hour.

Went shopping at Waitrose before lunch. Stopped 20 minutes at Bridgewater Boats for a pumpout (12). Most of the locks in our favour and a lot of water overflowing many of the gates but only saw one boat on the move. Moored below the lock. A sunny day with a cool breeze.

From Winkwell Bottom Lock No 61 to Aspley Bottom Lock No 67 arriving at 12:35 am. The time taken was 2 hours 15 minutes. 2.5 miles and 6 locks, averaging 3.78 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 59 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 108 locks, averaging 3.47 lock/miles per hour.

Came through Aspley Top Lock with Water Snail, a narrowboat with which we had shared Cowroast Lock. Moored 25 minutes for water above Lock 66 then moored below the lock for 35 minutes while we did shopping at Sainsbury's. Moored for lunch etc in the pound before Nash Mills Top Lock. A sunny start to the day but more cloudy in the afternoon.

Friday 12th April 2002

From Aspley Bottom Lock No 67 to Cassiobury Park Lock No 76 arriving at 12:40 am. The time taken was 3 hours 30 minutes. 5.12 miles and 10 locks, averaging 4.32 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 63 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 118 locks, averaging 3.44 lock/miles per hour.

A lot of locks in our fayour as we came down the canal this morning. Only passed two boats coming in the opposite direction. Stopped for lunch before Iron Bridge Lock.

From Cassiobury Park Lock No 76 to Troy Junction arriving at 5:05 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 20 minutes. 6.37 miles and 8 locks, averaging 4.31 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 66 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 126 locks, averaging 3.39 lock/miles per hour.

Most locks in our favour and the gates already opened, or opened for us, on some. Moored just before the weir, after the junction. A mostly sunny day, warm at times, but with a chill breeze.

Saturday 13th April 2002

From Troy Junction to Cowley Lock No 89 arriving at 12:50 am. The time taken was 3 hours 15 minutes. 5.5 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.23 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 70 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 131 locks, averaging 3.3 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped for ten minutes at the Uxbridge Boat Centre to buy a couple of mooring spikes and a cabin hook. There was a queue for water at the lock so we went straight through and moored on the visitor moorings below and went to the Malt Shovel for lunch (Chicken, Ham and Leek Pie 6.50 Roast Vegetables and Goats Cheese Lasagne 6.25).

From Cowley Lock No 89 to Bulls Bridge Junction arriving at 3:25 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 30 minutes. 4.25 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.83 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 71 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 131 locks, averaging 3.23 lock/miles per hour.

Came down to Tesco's to moor. Filled with water and did some shopping. A day of sunshine, cloud and a few spots of rain.

From Bulls Bridge Junction to Brentford Gauging Lock No 100 arriving at 12:25 am. The time taken was 3 hours 30 minutes. 5.37 miles and 11 locks, averaging 4.68 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 75 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 142 locks, averaging 3.23 lock/miles per hour.

A lot of rubbish in the canal between Bulls Bridge Junction and Norwood Top Lock. Had a good run down the locks, several boats coming up and most of the locks in our favour. Moored just before Thames Lock for lunch and to wait for the tide. As usual we saw several Tufted Ducks at Brentford.

From Brentford Gauging Lock No 100 to Teddington Lock arriving at 4:40 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 40 minutes. 5.75 miles and 2 locks, averaging 4.65 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 76 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 144 locks, averaging 3.18 lock/miles per hour.

A lot of cruisers on the river and a queue at the lock to get them through. Moored above the Lock. Sunny in the morning and a cloudy afternoon.

Monday 15th April 2002

From Teddington Lock to Hampton Court Bridge arriving at 10:20 am. The time taken was 1 hour 10 minutes. 4.62 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3.96 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 77 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 144 locks, averaging 3.13 lock/miles per hour.

We stopped at Hampton Court, where there was only one other boat moored. Went round the whole Palace including the grape vine, real tennis court and maze. We also had a carriage ride round the home park (9) pulled by a 20 year old horse called Thistle.

From Hampton Court Bridge to Walton Bridge arriving at 4:55 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 50 minutes. 4.75 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.68 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 79 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 146 locks, averaging 3.09 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped for water above Molesey Lock (15 minutes) then came up to moor on the visitor moorings at the start of the Desborough Island backwater. A cloudy but dry day with little or no wind.

Tuesday 16th April 2002

From Walton Bridge to Staines Bridge arriving at 12:25 am. The time taken was 2 hours 35 minutes. 7.25 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.97 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 82 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 149 locks, averaging 3.03 lock/miles per hour.

Saw a Jay as we came round the Desborough Island Backwater. Shared Shepperton Lock with a crusier. Stopped on the moorings just before the bridge and went to the Swan for lunch (Penne Pasta with sun dried tomatoes and olives 6.25, Sausage and Mash 7.95). After lunch I went to the station and got tickets for my trip to Peterborough tomorrow. A sunny day.

Thursday 18th April 2002

From Staines Bridge to Boveney Lock arriving at 4:15 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 15 minutes. 9.25 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.77 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 85 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 152 locks, averaging 2.95 lock/miles per hour.

Went shopping at Sainsbury's and had lunch on the boat before setting off. There was no lock keeper at Bell weir lock so we worked it ourselves. Saw quite a few Mandarin Ducks on the trip up as well as Great Crested Grebes. Stopped below the lock for a pump out (5) then went across to the water point. We had a thunder storm as we filled with water so we decided to stay on the moorings by the weir. By the time I had found the lock keeper, paid the mooring fee (4) and moored the boat it was 17.15. It has been a day of sunshine and cloud with the one heavy shower.

Friday 19th April 2002

From Boveney Lock to Cookham Bridge arriving at 12:25 am. The time taken was 3 hours 5 minutes. 7.75 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.81 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 88 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 156 locks, averaging 2.89 lock/miles per hour.

Saw kingfishers at Bray and Clivenden. Also saw more Mandarin Ducks and a pair of Tufted Ducks. Moored on the visitor moorings for lunch etc. Sunshine and cloud today.

From Cookham Bridge to Temple Island arriving at 1:00 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 25 minutes. 10.75 miles and 4 locks, averaging 4.32 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 92 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 160 locks, averaging 2.83 lock/miles per hour.

Saw two kingfishers before Marlow Lock. Stopped 10 minutes for water above Hurley Lock. Moored opposite Green Lands (5) and walked into Hambleden for lunch at the Stag and Huntsman. Went into the church after lunch. Misty sunshine in the morning but more cloudy in the afternoon.

From Temple Island to Sonning Bridge arriving at 4:25 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 35 minutes. 7.5 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.68 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 94 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 162 locks, averaging 2.77 lock/miles per hour.

Set off after lunch. A lot of boats out at Henley this Sunday afternoon. Went through Marsh Lock with a three year old boat that was a replica of the Andrews slipper launches. A lot of sailing dingies at Shiplake. Moored on the Great House visitor moorings. A sunny day.

From Sonning Bridge to Whitchurch Lock arriving at 1:30 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 20 minutes. 9.62 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.79 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 97 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 165 locks, averaging 2.71 lock/miles per hour.

Came up through Sonning Lock with the narrowboat Euclayptus who were moored in front of us last night. Stopped at Tesco's (35 minutes) for shopping. Called in at Better Boating for 10 minutes to get a couple of bolts for the alternator. Euclayptus were getting their stop button repaired there. At Mapledrum the lock keeper was varnishing the back of his office and did not see us coming but when I found him he quickly got us through the lock. Saw a Mandarin Duck after the lock. Moored before Whitchurch Bridge and had lunch at the George (Lab Cuttlets, Goats Cheese Pasta and a bottle of wine 33).

From Whitchurch Lock to Goring Lock arriving at 11:50 am. The time taken was 1 hour 20 minutes. 4.12 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.84 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 99 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 166 locks, averaging 2.68 lock/miles per hour.

Saw three Mandarin Ducks this morning. Changed the back belt again before setting off. From Goring Lock to Wallingford Bridge arriving at 4:45 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 10 minutes. 5.87 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.63 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 101 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 168 locks, averaging 2.64 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped 20 minutes to fill with water above Cleeve Lock. Saw 2 Kingfishers one at North Stoke and the other near Wallingford Bypass Bridge. Saw a lot of Coots on nests and Great Creasted Grebes. Moored between the trees just above the bridge. A warm sunny day.

From Wallingford Bridge to Culham Lock arriving at 4:50 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 35 minutes. 11 miles and 4 locks, averaging 4.19 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 105 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 172 locks, averaging 2.59 lock/miles per hour.

Went shopping at Waitrose and had lunch on the boat. Saw a kingfisher at Benson weir and another at Dorchester. Worked Benson Lock manually as there was no lock keeper around. Moored above Culham Lock (by the footbridge) and walked into Sutton Courtenay. A warm sunny day.

From Culham Lock to Sandford Lock arriving at 12:20 am. The time taken was 2 hours 20 minutes. 7.12 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.91 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 107 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 174 locks, averaging 2.55 lock/miles per hour.

Had a glass break this morning when the strong pull from the lock and the stone ledge at our mooring caused the boat to tip to one side. Stopped above Abingdon Lock (30 minutes) for water and pumpout (5). Saw two kingfishers below Sandford Lock. Moored above the lock for lunch etc.

Friday 26th April 2002

From Sandford Lock to Folly Bridge arriving at 10:05 am. The time taken was 55 minutes. 3.12 miles and 1 locks, averaging 4.49 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 108 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 175 locks, averaging 2.54 lock/miles per hour.

Moored on the visitor moorings below the bridge and went shopping in the city centre. In the afternoon we went to the Bate Collection of Musical Instruments (free) and round Christchurch College (4 each) and their Picture Gallery (2 each extra). Had a coffee and looked round some more shops and the market. Showers, cloud and sunny intervals.

From Folly Bridge to Osney Bridge arriving at 10:15 am. The time taken was 35 minutes. 1.12 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.63 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 108 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 176 locks, averaging 2.54 lock/miles per hour.

Did the 6699 hours service before setting off from Folly Bridge. Moored on the visitor moorings and went into Oxford again. Went round the Market where Beryl bought some sandals. Had lunch at Pizza Express (2 pizza, a bottle of red wine and 2 coffees 25.50). Went round the Ashmolean Museum after lunch. Another day of sunshine and cloud.

Came through Isis Lock and up the Oxford Canal. Stopped for water above Dukes Lock (45 minutes - a slow tap). Moored outside the Jolly Boatman at Thrupp and had lunch in the pub (Roast Lamb 6.95, Thai Vegetable Curry 5.25).

Shared Shipton Weir Lock with a woman who was single handed on her narrowboat. We also worked Bakers Lock for her before we went through. Moored opposite Enslow Wharf. A mostly dry day but very windy this afternoon.

From Enslow Bridge No 216 to Aynho Bridge No 190 arriving at 3:20 pm. The time taken was 5 hours 45 minutes. 11.25 miles and 6 locks, averaging 3 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 120 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 189 locks, averaging 2.4 lock/miles per hour.

Came through Northbrooke Lock and Dashwood Lock behind the solo woman narrowboater who we saw yesterday. Saw a Dabchick near Somerton Mill Bridge. Had lunch on the move. Moored just past the bridge, opposite Aynho Wharf. A mostly dry day but very strong winds at times.
