Saturday 1th June 2002

From to Napton Brickyard Bridge No 112 arriving at 11:50 am. The time taken was 2 hours 45 minutes. 4 miles and 9 locks, averaging 4.73 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 134 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 215 locks, averaging 2.34 lock/miles per hour.

Came down the Napton locks behind Indigo Slow and passed several boats coming up. Moored before the winding hole then took some photos at the bottom lock before going to the Folly pub for lunch (Vegetarian Pie 5.50, Chicken, Ham & Mustard Pie 7). After lunch we had a walk up the hill and came back along the towpath.

A lot of boats on the move this afternoon, many with flags for the Golden Jubilee. Saw Handsel at Braunston. We moored a little way after bridge 88. A warm sunny day.

Sunday 2th June 2002

From Braunston Junction to Clifton Wharf arriving at 12:50 am. The time taken was 2 hours 55 minutes. 8.75 miles and 3 locks, averaging 4.03 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 140 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 218 locks, averaging 2.27 lock/miles per hour.

Saw a hare on the canal side on the trip from Braunston. Stopped 30 minutes for water below Hilmorton Locks. Mored a little way before Bridge 66 and went to the Butler's Leap for lunch (Roast Turkey 6.45, Vegetable Bruschetta 5.50).

From Clifton Wharf to Easenhall Lane Bridge No 34 arriving at 5:05 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 0 minutes. 6 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 142 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 218 locks, averaging 2.23 lock/miles per hour.

A lot of boats on the move this afternoon. Moored for the night before the bridge. A mostly sunny day but clouds and showers this evening.

From Easenhall Lane Bridge No 34 to Wyken Arm arriving at 11:45 am. The time taken was 2 hours 15 minutes. 6.5 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.89 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 144 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 218 locks, averaging 2.2 lock/miles per hour.

Much of the canal past Stretton was covered in green duck weed again. Turned the boat by the Coventry Cruising Club but did not stop.

From Wyken Arm to Ansty Bridge No 14 arriving at 12:30 am. The time taken was 45 minutes. 2.25 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 145 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 218 locks, averaging 2.19 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped after the bridge and went to the Rose and Castle for lunch (Sausage & Mash 5.95, Jacket Potato with beans and cheese 4.95).

From Ansty Bridge No 14 to Newbold Tunnel (South-east end) arriving at 4:20 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 50 minutes. 7.75 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.74 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 148 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 218 locks, averaging 2.15 lock/miles per hour.

This afternoons trip was much drier than this mornings, when we had long periods of rain. Still quite a few boats braving the bad weather today. Moored on the 14 day moorings beyond the tunnel and bridge.

Tuesday 4th June 2002

From Newbold Tunnel (South-east end) to Brownsover Arm (disused) arriving at 78:5 pm. The time taken was 30 minutes. 1.37 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.74 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 148 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 218 locks, averaging 2.14 lock/miles per hour.

Moored just past the bridge and went to Tesco's for shopping.

From Brownsover Arm (disused) to Barby Wood Bridge No 78 arriving at 1:10 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 25 minutes. 5.62 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.57 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 151 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 221 locks, averaging 2.12 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped for water (25 minutes) at Hillmorton before going up the locks. Stopped just past bridge 78 for lunch.

Moored by Butcher's bridge. Spoke to Ray and his wife from Handsel as they came along the towpath. Brian Holt also stopped and introduced himself to me. A mostly dry day, cloudy at first but more sunny later.

Spent two days at Braunston. On the 5th the man from Wilsons came to measure up for a new cratch cover. We had unch at the Admiral Nelson (Gammon Steak 7, Vegetable Pasta Bake 5.85) and walked back through the village. Bought two plates at the Brick a Brac shop. On the 6th the man from Northampton Diesels came andixed the Eperspacher central heating. Cloudy and showery both days.

From Braunston Junction to Norton Junction arriving at 12:25 am. The time taken was 2 hours 45 minutes. 4.5 miles and 6 locks, averaging 3.82 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 155 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 227 locks, averaging 2.1 lock/miles per hour.

Set off at 8.25 and backed down to the water point by the Stop House to fill up, which took 45 minutes as the tap was slow and another boat (KK) was also using it. Then we went round into the marina for a pump out (5) and eventually left for the locks at 9.40. Shared the locks with a Weltonfield hire boat. A lot of boats coming down the locks and one going up in front of us. Passed four boats inthe tunnel. Stopped between bridges 2 and 3 for lunch etc. A showery day.

From Norton Junction to Clay Barn Bridge No 26 arriving at 12:40 am. The time taken was 4 hours 0 minutes. 9.37 miles and 7 locks, averaging 4.09 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 159 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 234 locks, averaging 2.1 lock/miles per hour.

Made good progress up the Watford Flight and through Crick Tunnel - passed one boat in the tunnel. Moored for Lunch just past the bridge.

From Clay Barn Bridge No 26 to Husband Bosworth Tunnel (North-east End) arriving at 4:55 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 25 minutes. 8.37 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.45 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 162 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 234 locks, averaging 2.05 lock/miles per hour.

Saw Florian near Welford Junction. Quite a lot of boats on the move today. Moored just after Honey Pot Farm Bridge (No 46) and walked into the village to have dinner at the Bell (Chicken Chassuer 8.75, Vegetable & Stilton Crumble 6.95). A warm day with sunshine and cloud.

Sunday 9th June 2002

From Husband Bosworth Tunnel (North-east End) to Foxton Junction arriving at 11:25 am. The time taken was 2 hours 45 minutes. 5.37 miles and 10 locks, averaging 5.59 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 165 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 244 locks, averaging 2.08 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped for water at the top of Foxton Locks. The Canaltime boat Mad as a Hatter 103 came up after us (they had moored in front of us last night and we spoke to them in the Bell Inn at Husbands Bosworth) and went down the locks in front of us. A lot of gongoozerlers at the locks. Did not stop at the junction but turned off towards Market Harborough.

From Foxton Junction to Market Harborough Basin and Wharves arriving at 1:25 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 0 minutes. 5.5 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.75 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 167 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 244 locks, averaging 2.05 lock/miles per hour.

Came down the arm behind two rather slow boats. Went to the Angel Hotel for lunch (Roast Lamb, Mediterranean Roast Vegetables and two sweets and coffee 9.95 each). We also had a nice bottle of red wine. Went shopping at Sainsbury's. A cloudy day with showers in the afternoon.

Monday 10th June 2002

From Foxton Junction to Great Glen Station Bridge No 77 arriving at 1:30 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 25 minutes. 6.62 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.4 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 172 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 249 locks, averaging 2.02 lock/miles per hour.

There was another boat a little way in front of us coming down the locks. We passes two boats coing the opposite direction at Pywell's Lock. Moored on the rings by the piling between bridges 78 and 79. I slipped on the front of the boat while mooring up and got a large bump on my shin. A day of sunny periods and heavy showers so we decided not to go any further after lunch.

Tuesday 11th June 2002

From Great Glen Station Bridge No 77 to Kilby Bridge No 87 arriving at 11:30 am. The time taken was 2 hours 25 minutes. 3.12 miles and 7 locks, averaging 4.19 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 175 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 256 locks, averaging 2.03 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped for water (20 minutes) then went across to the oposite bank to moor. We walked up the hill and found a shop selling milk. Came back to the cut and went into the Navigation Inn for lunch (Vegetable Tika Masala 5.95, Chicken Tika Masala 6.95) very good.

From Kilby Bridge No 87 to Gee's Lock No 36 arriving at 4:30 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 40 minutes. 4.12 miles and 7 locks, averaging 4.17 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 178 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 263 locks, averaging 2.04 lock/miles per hour.

Met a couple of boats coming up the locks as we went down. All the locks in our favour. Moored below Gee's Lock. A day of sunshine and cloud and one shower.

Wednesday 12th June 2002

From Gee's Lock No 36 to West Bridge, Leicester arriving at 10:45 am. The time taken was 2 hours 5 minutes. 4.12 miles and 5 locks, averaging 4.38 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 180 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 268 locks, averaging 2.04 lock/miles per hour.

Met an Anglo Welsh boat coming the other way at Blue Bank Lock then before we left a Blisworth boat - Scout Tunnel - came up behind us. We waited for them at the next lock and went through the other locks together. They were a young couple who were doing the Leicester Ring from Swarkestone. We moored on the pontoon at West Bridge and I went to collect the post. Saw Handsel go past. We went out for lunch at Bella Pasta then went to Sainsbury's. A dry day with sunshine and cloud.

Thursday 13th June 2002

From West Bridge, Leicester to Sileby Lock No 49 arriving at 1:00 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 15 minutes. 9.25 miles and 8 locks, averaging 4.06 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 184 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 276 locks, averaging 2.04 lock/miles per hour.

The section between Limekiln and Belgrave Locks was very shallow, polluted and full of rubbish. Passed a few boats including four day boats. Stopped below the lock for lunch etc.

Friday 14th June 2002

From Sileby Lock No 49 to A60 Road Bridge, Loughborough arriving at 12:50 am. The time taken was 2 hours 35 minutes. 6 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.48 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 186 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 279 locks, averaging 2.03 lock/miles per hour.

Moved across to Silby Mill Boatyard for a pump out (12), the july issue of C&RB, some Elsan Blue and 11 dri-dek panels (54.45). Stopped for 25 minutes to fill with water at Barrow. Saw a Green Woodpecker on the towpath before we got to Loughborough for lunch.

From A60 Road Bridge, Loughborough to Loughborough Lock No 53 arriving at 2:25 pm. The time taken was 50 minutes. 0.87 miles and 1 locks, averaging 2.24 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 187 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 280 locks, averaging 2.02 lock/miles per hour.

After lunch Beryl went into Loughborough to do some shopping at Sainsbury's while I fitted the Dri-Dek panels on the counter deck. Met Simitar at the lock then went on to moor before Bishop Meadow Lock. A dry morning but some showers in the afternoon.

From Loughborough Lock No 53 to Sawley Flood Lock No 1 arriving at 12:15 am. The time taken was 3 hours 35 minutes. 10.25 miles and 7 locks, averaging 4.81 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 191 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 287 locks, averaging 2.02 lock/miles per hour.

Came through the first few locks with Abraxas from Barrow on Soar. Stopped just before the Flood Lock and went to the Plank & Leggit for lunch (Pastitsio 7.85, Gammon Steak 7.15).

Sunday 16th June 2002

From Derwent Mouth Lock No 1 to Barrow Bridge No 16 arriving at 1:10 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 40 minutes. 7.87 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.24 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 196 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 293 locks, averaging 2.01 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped before Shardlow Lock for water (20 minutes) then came through the locks by ourselves, although there were a lot of boats going in the opposite direction. Moored just before the lock and went to the Bubble Inn for lunch (Brocolli & Cauliflower Bake 4.55, Roast Beef 5.25).

From Barrow Bridge No 16 to Willington Bridge No 23 arriving at 4:05 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 35 minutes. 4.12 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.23 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 197 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 294 locks, averaging 1.99 lock/miles per hour.

Came through Stenson Lock with the narrowboat Elle. Moored just after Bridge 25. Some sunshine in the morning but a cloudy day.

Monday 17th June 2002

From Willington Bridge No 23 to Barton Turn Lock No 10 arriving at 12:45 am. The time taken was 3 hours 45 minutes. 9.12 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.5 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 201 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 298 locks, averaging 1.98 lock/miles per hour.

Both Handsel and Abraxas went past this moring before we set off. Had a bit of a problem closing one of the bottom gates at Tatenhill Lock as something was in the way on the sill. We cleared it by giving a few forward thrusts with the prop to wash the obstruction away. Stopped for lunch above Barton Turn Lock.

From Barton Turn Lock No 10 to Common Lock No 14 arriving at 4:20 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 20 minutes. 4.37 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.59 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 203 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 302 locks, averaging 1.97 lock/miles per hour.

Met quite a few boats coming down the locks as we went up today. Moored before Hunts Lock. A mostly sunny day with some cloud.

Tuesday 18th June 2002

From Common Lock No 14 to Rugeley Bridge No 66 arriving at 12:40 am. The time taken was 3 hours 55 minutes. 8.25 miles and 6 locks, averaging 3.64 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 207 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 308 locks, averaging 1.97 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped before Fradley Junction Lock for water (15 minutes). Quite a few boats coming up and down the locks, including Abraxas which was immediately behind us. Stopped on the 7 day moorings just past the bridge. A mainly sunny day with cloudy periods.

Thursday 20th June 2002

From Rugeley Bridge No 66 to Great Haywood Junction arriving at 10:40 am. The time taken was 2 hours 15 minutes. 5 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.11 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 209 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 310 locks, averaging 1.95 lock/miles per hour.

After spending two nights at Rugeley, during which time I attended an EA meeting at Kettering, we set off and passed Duorf II moored some way before Colwich Lock. Quite a few boats on the move today. Stopped for water at the junction and Beryl went to the farm shop.

From Great Haywood Junction to Weston upon Trent Bridge No 80 arriving at 1:20 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 20 minutes. 3.5 miles and 2 locks, averaging 2.36 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 212 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 312 locks, averaging 1.94 lock/miles per hour.

Had to wait a while at Weston Lock as boats in front of us went through. Moored just after Salt Bridge No 82 for lunch etc. A mostly sunny day.

Friday 21st June 2002

From Weston upon Trent Bridge No 80 to Barlaston Bridge No 103 arriving at 2:15 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 55 minutes. 9.75 miles and 10 locks, averaging 4.02 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 217 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 322 locks, averaging 1.94 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped at Stone for 15 minutes to get a pumpout (10). Spoke to the man on Sovereign, from North Cheshire Cruising Club, about going up the Ribble Link. Saw Peddlewych at the top of Stone Locks. Had lunch on the move and moored just before Oldroad Bridge No 104. Visited the Wedgwood Factory (6.95 each).

Sunday 23rd June 2002

From Barlaston Bridge No 103 to Etruria Junction arriving at 12:40 am. The time taken was 3 hours 0 minutes. 5.75 miles and 6 locks, averaging 3.92 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 220 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 328 locks, averaging 1.94 lock/miles per hour.

Met quite a few boats going down the locks as we came up and we had a boat in front of us. Went past the junction to the marina to get some diesel (52.63 litres at 38p a litre) then turned and came back to the junction - taking 20 minutes in all for this detour.Filled with water (25 minutes) then moved down to the visitor mooring for lunch.

From Etruria Junction to Stockton Brook Bottom Lock No 5 arriving at 4:40 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 10 minutes. 6.5 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.32 lock/miles per hour. A fair amount of rubbish in the canal as we came out of Stoke on Trent and we had a few stones thrown at us near Northwood. Plenty of boats about. Saw a hare after Engine Lock. Moored just before the locks. Went to the Holly Bush Harvester for dinner (Vegetable Penne Pasta 5.95, Flame Grilled Bacon Steaks 6.95). A cloudy day with sunny spells and some light showers.

Tuesday 25th June 2002

From Stockton Brook Bottom Lock No 5 to River Churnet Aqueduct arriving at 12:15 am. The time taken was 3 hours 10 minutes. 5.75 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.39 lock/miles per hour. Came up the Stockton Brook locks and passed Elizabeth of York at the facilities at Park Lane Bridge. Turned up the Leek branch and winded at the end to back into a mooring next to nb. Roding. Went into Leek and had lunch at the Roebuck Hotel (Vegetable Korma 4.95, Liver & Onion 4.95). Walked round the town and did some shopping in Safeway. A cloudy day with sunny periods.

From River Churnet Aqueduct to River Churnet Junction arriving at 1:05 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 10 minutes. 8 miles and 7 locks, averaging 3.6 lock/miles per hour. Saw a kingfisher as we came down the Leek Branch. A lot of moored boat as usual. Turned at the junction to go down the locks and met a Canaltime boat coming up. Stopped for water (very high pressure as usual - 15 minutes) then moved on to the 48 hour moorings for lunch.

From River Churnet Junction to Flint Mill Lock No 17 arriving at 2:15 pm. The time taken was 15 minutes. 0.25 miles and 0 locks, averaging 1 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 230 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 344 locks, averaging 1.92 lock/miles per hour.

Turned above the lock as the end of the canal is still closed following problems with the bank.

met a boat coming down through Woods Lock and a couple of young men on bikes helped us through the Cheddleton Locks. Moored outside the Hollybush Inn and had dinner there (Vegetable Curry 5.95, Chicken Madras 6.95) excellent. A mostly cloudy day but more sun this evening.

Wednesday 26th June 2002

From Hollybush Bridge No 38 to Engine Lock No 4 arriving at 12:20 am. The time taken was 3 hours 5 minutes. 4.5 miles and 9 locks, averaging 4.38 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 236 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 358 locks, averaging 1.94 lock/miles per hour.

Came up the Hazelhurst Locks behind Seavixen who was single handed. Also passed a couple of BW boats coming down. Came down the Stockton Brook flight in good time and went on to moor for lunch below Engine Lock.

Quite a few boats on the move today. Called in at Stoke Marina to see if they could fix the toilet but they coundn't. Came on to moor for the night at the tunnel entrance. A Peak Forsest hire boat moored behind us. A cloudy day with some sunny periods.

From Harecastle Tunnel (south end) to Harding's Wood Junction arriving at 73:0 pm. The time taken was 50 minutes. 1.87 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.24 lock/miles per hour. We were the only boat to come through the tunnel at 8 am this morning. Moored before the junction and went shopping at Tesco. In the afternoon I went out and took photographs. A day of sunshine and cloud with one shower around midday.

Friday 28th June 2002

From Harding's Wood Junction to Chellshill Aqueduct arriving at 12:40 am. The time taken was 3 hours 15 minutes. 3.75 miles and 14 locks, averaging 5.46 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 244 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 375 locks, averaging 1.94 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped 30 minutes for water and pumpout (6) at the Red Bull depot. Met several boats coming up the locks as we went down including 3 or 4 Black Prince boats. Moore just after the aqueduct for lunch etc. A day of sunshine and cloud with a moderate wind.

Saturday 29th June 2002

From Chellshill Aqueduct to Wheelock Bottom Lock No 66 arriving at 11:45 am. The time taken was 2 hours 45 minutes. 3 miles and 12 locks, averaging 5.45 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 247 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 387 locks, averaging 1.97 lock/miles per hour.

Another day with a good number of boats on the move. We made good progress down the locks with Beryl going on ahead to set most of the locks. Moored at Wheelock and went to the Cheshire Cheese for lunch (Broccoli & Cream Cheese Bake 5.25, Ham & Mushroom Omelette 4.50).

From Wheelock Bottom Lock No 66 to King's Lock No 71 arriving at 4:00 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 35 minutes. 5.87 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.82 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 249 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 391 locks, averaging 1.97 lock/miles per hour.

Moored before the lock and went to the Chandlery for bolts and a seal for the Sealand Traveler. Had a walk into the town and Beryl got a few things. A cloudy day with some sunny periods.

Stopped 10 minutes for diesel at Kings Lock (130.4 litres for 38.32) then moved across for water (15 minutes). Moored a little way before the bridge. A cloudy day with the rain starting a few minutes before we moored.
