Tuesday 1th April 2003

From to Whittlesey Junction arriving at 1:50 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 5 minutes. 4.75 miles and 1 locks, averaging 2.76 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 2 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 4.75 miles and 1 locks, averaging 2.76 lock/miles per hour.

Set off from home at 10.20 and arrived at Stanground Lock mooring at 10.40, we were due to go through the lock at 12.30. At 12.05 the lock keeper got the lock ready for us and we set off. The Eberspacher heating unit started to make a lot of noise and smoke then stopped working. We moored for twenty minutes on the Whittlesey 48 hour moorings to have a look at the Eberspacher and to dump the rubbish.

From Whittlesey Junction to March arriving at 6:00 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 40 minutes. 14.62 miles and 1 locks, averaging 4.26 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 5 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 19.37 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.72 lock/miles per hour.

Saw three kingfishers, one near Whittlesey. Stopped for 10 minutes at Fox's Marina to find out who could fix the Eberspacher. They recommended Parkinson's of Peterborough. We went on to moor just before the Town Bridge. A cold windy day with heavy showers and a few sunny intervals in the evening.

Wednesday 2th April 2003

From March to Upwell arriving at 4:10 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 30 minutes. 7.12 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.25 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 8 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 26.5 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.58 lock/miles per hour.

Went shopping at Somerfield in March then had lunch with Valerie and Colin at the Griffin (Spinach Cannelloni 7.95 and Ham & Leek Pie 6.95). We then set off and moored by Upwell Church. A cool windy day with some sunshine and a brief couple of showers.

Thursday 3th April 2003

From Upwell to Middle Level Drain Aqueduct arriving at 10:40 am. The time taken was 1 hour 30 minutes. 2 miles and 0 locks, averaging 1.33 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 9 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 28.5 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.23 lock/miles per hour.

Moored on the Well Creek Trust mooring just past the abandoned cottage. Reflections, a Kingsground narrowboat, went past us this afternoon. A cold sunny morning with warmer cloudy weather in the afternoon.

Friday 4th April 2003

From Middle Level Drain Aqueduct to Salter's Lode Sluice arriving at 10:15 am. The time taken was 1 hour 0 minutes. 4.12 miles and 0 locks, averaging 4.12 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 10 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 32.62 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.31 lock/miles per hour.

Passed Reflections soon after we set off as they had moored just round the bend from us. Saw the look keeper (Paul) and filled in the form ready for going through the lock.

From Salter's Lode Sluice to Above Denver Sluice arriving at 11:15 am. The time taken was 30 minutes. 0.37 miles and 2 locks, averaging 4.74 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 11 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 33 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.38 lock/miles per hour.

We came through the lock first, followed by Reflections then two cruisers. Had to keep right then make a turn in front of the sluice into the lock to avoid the mud banks. Stopped to fill with water above the lock at the press tap on the right (not a great success). Spoke to Jim Taylor and his wife on Reflections then had lunch.

From Above Denver Sluice to Wissington New Road Bridge arriving at 3:40 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 10 minutes. 6.25 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.88 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 13 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 39.25 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.3 lock/miles per hour.

Turned up the Wissey and went through Hilgay and on past the sugar beet factory and moored on the river a little way past the lake. A mostly sunny day and warmer than yesterday.

From Wissington New Road Bridge to Stoke Ferry Bridge arriving at 10:00 am. The time taken was 1 hour 0 minutes. 3.75 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3.75 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 14 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 43 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.33 lock/miles per hour.

Saw three deer in a field on the way up to Stoke Ferry went under both the bridges and past the GOBA and private moorings to the turning point. A bit of a struggle to turn as the wind was against us.

From Stoke Ferry Bridge to Hilgay Road Bridges arriving at 12:05 am. The time taken was 2 hours 5 minutes. 6.75 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3.24 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 16 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 49.75 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.32 lock/miles per hour.

Saw two kingfishers on the way down the river and stopped on the visitor moorings by the bridge for lunch.

River Wissey to Old West River (Great Ouse)

From Hilgay Road Bridges to River Wissey Junction arriving at 2:15 pm. The time taken was 35 minutes. 2.12 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3.63 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 17 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 51.87 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.33 lock/miles per hour.

We passed a wide crusier in the narrow channel as we came down to the Geat Ouse junction. Turned upstream at the junction but did not stop.

From River Wissey Junction to Brandon Creek arriving at 3:35 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 20 minutes. 5.75 miles and 0 locks, averaging 4.31 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 18 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 57.62 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.4 lock/miles per hour.

Rather a wind blowing on the main river after the sheltered waters of the Wissey. Saw a couple of cruisers coming downstream and passed a narrowboat going upstream. Moored on the visitor mooring past the junction. A sunny morning but a cloudy afternoon.

From Brandon Creek to Ely, A142 Road bridge arriving at 10:50 am. The time taken was 1 hour 55 minutes. 9.25 miles and 0 locks, averaging 4.83 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 20 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 66.87 miles and 5 locks, averaging 3.53 lock/miles per hour.

Came up river in cloud. Saw a knigfisher near Ely. Moored near the Marina Bridge and went shopping at Tesco's. After lunch we went round an Antque Fair and to the Antique Centre. The sun came out in the late afternoon.

Spent the day in Ely. The man who was coming to fix the Eberspacher could not come as his van broke down, he is coming tomorrow. Had a pumpout (free) filled with water (50p) and went to Bridge Boats to get the trouble with the reverse gear fixed. Met Dad at the station from the 3.25 train. Had dinner at the Clipper. A sunny cold day.

Tuesday 8th April 2003

From Ely, A142 Road bridge to Clayhythe Bridge arriving at 4:00 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 5 minutes. 11.25 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.97 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 23 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 78.12 miles and 6 locks, averaging 3.59 lock/miles per hour.

Spent most of the morning having the Eberspacher investigated and removed for futher investigation. After lunch we came up to the Cam and saw a kingfisher just past Upware. Moored above the bridge and found the Bridge Hotel was closed today. Mostly sunny with cloudy periods.

Wednesday 9th April 2003

From Clayhythe Bridge to Jesus Green Lock arriving at 10:45 am. The time taken was 1 hour 55 minutes. 5.87 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.58 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 25 hours 20 minutes. total cruising time, 84 miles and 7 locks, averaging 3.59 lock/miles per hour.

Saw a knigfisher and some grey wagtails before Baits Bite Lock. Came up to Cambridge and turned below the lock and moored. Had lunch just before noon.

From Jesus Green Lock to Popes Corner arriving at 3:35 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 25 minutes. 13.62 miles and 2 locks, averaging 4.57 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 28 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 97.62 miles and 9 locks, averaging 3.71 lock/miles per hour.

Came down river to moor at the Fish & Duck where we had dinner. A cold day with sunshine and a few spots of rain.

Thursday 10th April 2003

Came back to Ely and stopped at the marina for gas (15) and water (50p) and then moored opposite. Went into town and had lunch at the Stagecoach then went down to the station to see Dad off. Did some shopping at Tesco then came back to do another pumpout (free). Another cold and cloudy day.

Friday 11th April 2003

Beryl went to dump the rubish and to Tesco's before we set off. Saw a kingfisher and two oystercatchers as we came up the Old West River. Moored for lunch just past the bridge.

From Aldreth Bridge to Brownshill Staunch arriving at 4:10 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 20 minutes. 5.62 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.41 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 35 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 9 locks, averaging 3.09 lock/miles per hour.

Two narrowboats that we had seen at Ely this morning, and who passed us at lunch time, were moored a little way ahead of us as we set off. They followed us through the two locks. We moored at the Pike & Eel Inn and had dinner there (17.95 each for 2 courses). A warmer sunny day with some cloudy periods.

Saw an oystercatcher before we got to St Ives Lock.Had to wait some time at Hemingford Lock as the two narrowboats we saw yesterday were going through in front of us and a cruiser was coming down. Saturday 12th April 2003

From Hemingford Lock No 14 to Godmanchester Lock No 12 arriving at 3:10 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 30 minutes. 5 miles and 1 locks, averaging 4 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 39 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 12 locks, averaging 2.81 lock/miles per hour.

Called into Hartford Marina (for 20 minutes) and got some rubber strip for the weed hatch and some magazines. Turned a little way before Godmanchester Lockand headed back downstream.

From Godmanchester Lock No 12 to Huntingdon arriving at 3:25 pm. The time taken was 15 minutes. 0.75 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 40 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 12 locks, averaging 2.79 lock/miles per hour.

Moored by Huntingdon Bridge and fitted the new rubber seal to the weed hatch. A warmer sunny day with a few clouds.

Sunday 13th April 2003

From Huntingdon to Holywell arriving at 12:50 am. The time taken was 3 hours 30 minutes. 8.37 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.25 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 43 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 15 locks, averaging 2.64 lock/miles per hour.

Found someone painting their boat on the lock mooring at Houghton. While we were going through the lock a Bridge Boats hire cruiser came up behind us so we waited for them for 15 minutes at Hemingford Lock and went through with them and through St Ives together. Stopped for lunch just before the Pike & Eel pub.

From Holywell to Aldreth Bridge arriving at 4:00 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 20 minutes. 8.37 miles and 2 locks, averaging 4.44 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 45 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 17 locks, averaging 2.55 lock/miles per hour.

A windy afternoon which gave us some trouble at Brownshill Lock where I banged the boat on the piling while trying to manoeuvre past other boats. Shared the lock and Hermitage with a small cruiser. Moored a little way before the bridge. A sunny day.

Saw two pairs of oystercatchers, one just past the Twenty Pence Marina and the other pair a little way before Pope's Corner. Could not stop for water at Ely Marina as all the morings were full so we went on to the park and filled up from the pumpout station before lunch. Went round the town to do a bit of shopping and collect the post then down to the station to find out the train times for my Peterborough meeting. A warm but breezy day.

Went shopping at tesco's before setting off. Turned and stopped at the Black Horse Bridge moorings for lunch.

Came back to Ely in warm sunshine and moored opposite the marina. Posted my film. A sunny day rather hazy in the morning.

From Ely, A142 Road bridge to Brandon Creek arriving at 11:45 am. The time taken was 2 hours 5 minutes. 9.25 miles and 0 locks, averaging 4.44 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 53 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 17 locks, averaging 2.18 lock/miles per hour.

At 8.55 we moved across to Ely Marina to fill with water (50p) and diesel (151.92 litres @ 30p = 45.58) we then turned the boat and wentdown to the pumpout but it was out of order. Stopped for a pumpout at the Black Horse then went on to the visitor moorings before Brandon Creek for lunch.

From Brandon Creek to Cutt-Off channel arriving at 4:45 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 15 minutes. 10 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3.08 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 57 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 17 locks, averaging 2.05 lock/miles per hour.

Saw a kingfisher, several pairs of oystercatchers and some lapwing on the trip up. We more a little way past the Cut off channel by an open field. A warm sunny day with a good breeze.

Friday 18th April 2003

From Cutt-Off channel to Brandon Staunch No 6 arriving at 12:30 am. The time taken was 55 minutes. 3.37 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3.68 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 57 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 17 locks, averaging 2.02 lock/miles per hour.

Did the 7310 hour engine service and changed the oil/air/fuel filters and both the alternator belts before setting off. Arrived at Brandon Lock but could not turn there due to silting across the wide part of the river below the weir. Stopped for lunch on the mooring.

From Brandon Staunch No 6 to Little Ouse Bridge arriving at 5:10 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 40 minutes. 11.37 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3.1 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 61 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 17 locks, averaging 1.9 lock/miles per hour.

Set off backwards down the river for two miles to a suitable turning point. The wind and and flow caused us a lot of problems and we scratched a lot of our new paintwork on the overhanging trees. Made good progress after we turned and moored just before the bridge. A sunny breezy day.

Started to cast off and tried to leave our mooring at 7.20 but the wind was against us so we did not get away until 7.35. Saw a kingfisher on Brandon Creek.

From Above Denver Sluice to Salter's Lode Sluice arriving at 1:15 pm. The time taken was 45 minutes. 0.37 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.16 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 64 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 19 locks, averaging 1.85 lock/miles per hour.

Had to wait a long time for the tide (it was over and hour late) then for two locks of boats, up and down, infront of us. We set off at about 12.30 and moored after the lock for lunch.

Came down Well Creek behind the narrowboat Maggie Tulliver. Saw a kingfisher. Moored at Outwell Basin. A cloudy, windy and chilly day.

Sunday 20th April 2003

From Outwell Junction to Staffurth's Bridge arriving at 12:35 am. The time taken was 3 hours 30 minutes. 11.87 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.68 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 69 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 20 locks, averaging 1.73 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped to have a word with Roger at Upwell then went on to the lock. Moored at the facilities at March for 10 minutes but decided there was no suitable water tap there and there were no spare mooring places so we came on to moor on the river for lunch and the rest of the day. A cloudy and less chilly day.

Saw two kingfishers just after setting off. An ex Viking hire boat was coming down through Ashline Lock as we arrived. We went through and stopped for lunch on the visitor moorings.

Were followed back to Stanground by the narrowboat Blenheim. We let them through the lock before us. Then we went across to the embankment to fill with water before returning to our mooring. A lot of boats about today, especially on Kings Dyke this afternoon. A warm day with some sunshine.

Moored by the Key Theatre to have our new diesel heating installed. After lunch we went to Asda for our shopping then filled with water and had a pumpout before setting off. Went through Orton Lock with Fox Hound. Moored in Ferry Meadows where we met the Parkers on Bobbles. A warm day with some sunshine.

Wednesday 23rd April 2003

From Orton Lock No 37 to Wansford Bridge arriving at 12:25 am. The time taken was 3 hours 5 minutes. 9 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3.57 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 78 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 25 locks, averaging 1.58 lock/miles per hour.

Left six other boats on the moorings at Ferry Meadows as we set off this morning. Went through Alwalton and Water Newton Locks behind a narrowboat called Wakeman. Saw a kingfisher as we approached Wansford and stopped for lunch just before the bridge.

Saw another kingfisher before Wandsford Lock. Moored at Fotheringhay next to Tessa from Longport Wharf. A warm day of sunshine and cloud.

Thursday 24th April 2003

From Warmington Lock No 31 to Upper Barnwell Lock No 26 arriving at 12:20 am. The time taken was 3 hours 20 minutes. 8.75 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.83 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 85 hours 40 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 33 locks, averaging 1.55 lock/miles per hour.

We were followed through Perio and Cotterstock Locks by an Environment Agency boat. At Oundle Bridge I took the wrong arch (no signs at all on the bridge) and got stuck under the bridge. No amount of reversing and pushing would get us off but after several minutes the EA boat came up and following a couple of unsucessful atempts got us afloat again. We shared Ashton Lock with them then they went ahead, they were aiming to get to Cogenhoe today. Stopped for lunch on the Barnwell Mill moorings and Brian came to fix the heating switch. A sunny morning with rain in the afternoon.

Friday 25th April 2003

From Upper Barnwell Lock No 26 to Irthlingborough Bridge arriving at 4:35 pm. The time taken was 7 hours 15 minutes. 16.5 miles and 10 locks, averaging 3.66 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 92 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 43 locks, averaging 1.54 lock/miles per hour.

Came through Wadenhoe Lock with a narrowboat called Mijikama. Stopped 30 minutes for water by the Kings Head. Saw two lapwing just past Wadenhoe. Had lunch on the move and stopped on the visitor moorings. Went to Seasons Bistro (Wild rice, aubergine and tomato bake 7.95, Lamb Wellington 11.95) very good. A warm mostly cloudy day, dry in the morning and light rain all afternoon.

Saturday 26th April 2003

From Irthlingborough Bridge to Wellingborough Bridge arriving at 11:40 am. The time taken was 2 hours 35 minutes. 5.25 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.19 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 95 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 46 locks, averaging 1.53 lock/miles per hour.

Had a pumpout at Irthlingborough before setting off. The new paddles and walkway on the top gate at Wellingborough Lower Lock are very good, far better than any other of Nene mitre gates. We stopped at Wellingborough and went to Tesco's then had lunch on the boat.

From Wellingborough Bridge to Cogenhoe Lock No 7 arriving at 5:10 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 40 minutes. 6.62 miles and 7 locks, averaging 3.71 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 99 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 53 locks, averaging 1.54 lock/miles per hour.

Followed an un-named boat through several locks before we passed them when we shared Barton Lock - they did not want us to wait for them. Got caught on a shoal below White Mills Lock but managed to scrape by. A mostly cloudy day with a strong breeze at times.

Sunday 27th April 2003

From Cogenhoe Lock No 7 to Northampton Lock No 1 arriving at 12:15 am. The time taken was 3 hours 20 minutes. 5.87 miles and 6 locks, averaging 3.56 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 102 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 59 locks, averaging 1.55 lock/miles per hour.

A windy day with waves creasting as we went up the wide stretch above Weston Faval Lock. Met two narrowboats coming down as we got to Northampton Lock. Morred for lunch before the bridge.

From Northampton Lock No 1 to Wootton Lock No 14 arriving at 3:40 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 15 minutes. 3 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.11 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 104 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 63 locks, averaging 1.56 lock/miles per hour.

Had trouble getting out from the bank at lock 14 due to the strong wind. Moored on the aqueduct between locks 14 and 15. A day of sunshine, cloud, brief showers and wind.

We came up the flight without meeting any other boats. Moored before the bridge for lunch.

Stopped for water at Gayton Junction for 30 minutes. A Napton boat stopped alongside us for water while we were filling up and we spent another 10 minutes chatting to them before setting off again. Moored just past bridge 35. A windy, cloudy day with some light rain.

Tuesday 29th April 2003

From Bugbrooke Bridge No 36 to Norton Junction arriving at 1:10 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 5 minutes. 8.87 miles and 7 locks, averaging 3.89 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 113 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 84 locks, averaging 1.63 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped for 10 minutes at Millar Marine and bought some blue. Saw a yellowhammer just past Stowe Hill. Shared the Buckby flight with an Alvechurch boat. Moored just before the junction and went to the New Inn for lunch (New York Lasagne 7.95, Bread Mushroom, chips & salad 6).

From Norton Junction to Braunston Junction arriving at 4:45 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 15 minutes. 4.5 miles and 6 locks, averaging 4.67 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 115 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 90 locks, averaging 1.65 lock/miles per hour.

Met two boats going the other way in Braunston Tunnel. Made good progress down the locks by ourselves and passed several boats coming up the flight. Moored before the marina and bought a new long handle windless for Beryl, to replace the one left at Cogenhoe Lock. A mostly cloudy day with some sunshine.

Wednesday 30th April 2003

From Braunston Junction to Brownsover Arm (disused) arriving at 12:30 am. The time taken was 3 hours 35 minutes. 9.87 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.59 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 118 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 93 locks, averaging 1.62 lock/miles per hour.

Filled with water (15 minutes) at Braunston Stop House then went to Midland Chandlers for a new boathook (23) and some new bolts for the toilet (6) which took another 5 minutes. A lot of work was being done at Hillmorton and only one lock of each pair was in action. Luckily we met two boats coming up the flight so we made good progress through the locks. The hotel boats Duke & Duchess arrived at the bottom lock as we came out. Moored before the road bridge and went to Tesco's for lunch (Chicken Korma 3.49, Vegetable Lasagne 2.99) and to do our shopping.

Passed quite a few boats this afternoon moored before the bridge. A sunny start to the day but increasing cloud and a few showers in the afternoon and even some thunder.
