Sunday 1th October 1995

From to Cromwell Lock No 11 arriving at 4:40 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 10 minutes. 16.12 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3.87 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 754 hours 42 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1045 locks, averaging 1.52 lock/miles per hour.

Left at 1230 to catch the tide but it was a low journey against the wind up to Cromwell lock, where we arrived at 1600, then we waited for Henry II and two cruisers before the lock was filled, we went through, moored and filled with water. A sunny day with cloudy periods and a moderate wind.

Monday 2th October 1995

From Cromwell Lock No 11 to Newark Road Bridge arriving at 10:50 am. The time taken was 1 hour 30 minutes. 5.37 miles and 2 locks, averaging 4.91 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 756 hours 12 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1047 locks, averaging 1.52 lock/miles per hour.

Moored by the bridge and went shopping in the town, then had lunch on the boat. Saw a lot of coots and a few great crested grebes on the way up the river.

From Newark Road Bridge to Gunthorpe Bridge arriving at 4:25 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 30 minutes. 14.12 miles and 3 locks, averaging 4.89 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 759 hours 42 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1050 locks, averaging 1.51 lock/miles per hour.

Moored on the visitors pontoon, a tight squeeze so had to move the cruiser behind us back one cleat, they came back to the boat and sailed off soon afterwards. We had cloud in the early and late part of the day but sun in the middle. Some fairly strong winds at times.

Tuesday 3th October 1995

From Gunthorpe Bridge to Castle Lock arriving at 12:25 am. The time taken was 3 hours 15 minutes. 10.5 miles and 3 locks, averaging 4.15 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 762 hours 57 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1053 locks, averaging 1.51 lock/miles per hour.

Moored just before Castle Lock and had lunch then went round the centre of Nottingham.

From Castle Lock to Lenton Chain Junction arriving at 3:10 pm. The time taken was 35 minutes. 1.12 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.63 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 763 hours 32 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1054 locks, averaging 1.51 lock/miles per hour.

Moved down from the centre to moor outside Sainsbury's for the night. Tried to go to the marina chandlery but it is closed on Tuesdays. A mostly cloudy day with some wind and a few sunny periods.

Wednesday 4th October 1995

From Lenton Chain Junction to Trent Lock Junction arriving at 12:15 am. The time taken was 3 hours 15 minutes. 7.62 miles and 2 locks, averaging 2.96 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 766 hours 47 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1056 locks, averaging 1.51 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped for water just before Beeston Lock. Moored on the Pontoon and had lunch in the Trent Navigation - very nice, rolls 1 each and home brewed beer. Saw Patrick as we moored, saw him last at Ellesmere.

From Trent Lock Junction to Swarkeston Lock No 5 arriving at 4:55 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 10 minutes. 9 miles and 7 locks, averaging 3.84 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 770 hours 57 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1063 locks, averaging 1.51 lock/miles per hour.

Moored just before the lock. Saw two kingfishers on the way down the last stretch of canal. A day the started cloudy but gave way to quite a lot of sunshine and a few brief showers. A lovely evening.

Thursday 5th October 1995

From Swarkeston Lock No 5 to Willington Bridge No 23 arriving at 12:20 am. The time taken was 3 hours 10 minutes. 5.25 miles and 1 locks, averaging 1.97 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 774 hours 7 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1064 locks, averaging 1.5 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped at Stenson for a pumpout (10), gas (10.60) and Diesel (25.74 for 117 litres). Stopped for water at Willington then moved across the canal to moor for lunch, went to the Green Man, very good value (Haddock 3, Steak pie 2.50).

From Willington Bridge No 23 to Shobnall Road Bridge arriving at 3:20 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 10 minutes. 5.25 miles and 1 locks, averaging 2.88 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 776 hours 17 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1065 locks, averaging 1.5 lock/miles per hour.

Moored and went into town (1.25 mile) to do some shopping at Marks and Safeway's and to collect the post, but it had not arrived. A mostly sunny day but with some cloud and a few brief showers again.

Friday 6th October 1995

From Shobnall Road Bridge to Common Lock No 14 arriving at 4:00 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 50 minutes. 8.25 miles and 7 locks, averaging 3.98 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 780 hours 7 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1072 locks, averaging 1.5 lock/miles per hour.

Went into Burton to do some more shopping at Safeway and to collect the post, but the post had not arrived. Phoned Dad to check that it had been sent off on Wednesday OK. Arranged to have it sent on to Coventry if it arrives at Burton. Had an early lunch and set off. Saw Dorpets Dream again. Moored just past the lock. A cloudy, rainy day with some quite strong breezes.

Saturday 7th October 1995

From Common Lock No 14 to Whittington Brook Junction arriving at 12:35 am. The time taken was 3 hours 10 minutes. 6.5 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3 lock/miles per hour. As we approached Fradley we passed "Wild Goose" that Sheila had shown at Chester. Moored for lunch etc. just before Whittington bridge. A dull day with some light showers.

Sunday 8th October 1995

From Whittington Brook Junction to Amington (Bridge 66) arriving at 12:50 am. The time taken was 3 hours 30 minutes. 8.5 miles and 2 locks, averaging 3 lock/miles per hour. Started off at 8.45 and got to Fazeley by 10.50 where we spent 35 minutes filling up with water. Stopped at Amington for lunch (casserole).

From Amington (Bridge 66) to Polesworth (Mill Bridge No 53) arriving at 3:15 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 5 minutes. 2.5 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.31 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 787 hours 52 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1077 locks, averaging 1.49 lock/miles per hour.

Moored by bridge 52 and had a look round the village, a good selection of shops but did not find agood pub. A hot sunny day with occasional gusts of wind.

Monday 9th October 1995

From Polesworth (Mill Bridge No 53) to Atherstone Top Lock No 1 arriving at 12:55 am. The time taken was 3 hours 15 minutes. 5 miles and 10 locks, averaging 4.62 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 791 hours 7 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1087 locks, averaging 1.5 lock/miles per hour.

Did some shopping at the Spar in Polesworth before setting off for the Atherstone flight. These locks are quick to empty but slow to fill. A boat followed us up the flight and we met four boats coming down, two of them hiire boats. Stopped for water and lunch.

Stopped at the Navigation Inn. A fine day, warm and sunny.

Tuesday 10th October 1995

Bridges 3 and 2 near the terminus were very silted up and we had a job to get through number 2. Moored at the basin and went for lunch at the "Newt and Cucumber" near the cathedrel. Did some shopping in M&S and went to the Post Office but our mail still not arrived. When we got back to the boat we found that Champers had gone on a wander again. Wednesday 11th October 1995

From Coventry Basin to Ansty Bridge No 14 arriving at 1:00 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 20 minutes. 9.25 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.78 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 800 hours 2 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1088 locks, averaging 1.48 lock/miles per hour.

After checking at the Post Office to see if the mail had arrived we started off from Coventry at 9.20. Had trouble getting under bridges 2 and 3 again because of the weed. Stopped at Hawkesbury junction at 11.20 and took 20 minutes to fill with water. Stopped for lunch just past bridge 17 near Ansty.

From Ansty Bridge No 14 to Brownsover Arm (disused) arriving at 4:50 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 15 minutes. 9.12 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.81 lock/miles per hour. Had a very pleasant afternoon cruising to Rugby, trees changing colour, good countryside and fine weather. Beryl did a couple of turns with the steering. Moored near bridge 58. A day that started grey but which ended with some autumnal sunshine.

Thursday 12th October 1995

From Brownsover Arm (disused) to Hillmorton Top Locks Nos 6 and 7 arriving at 1:00 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 35 minutes. 2.87 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.71 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 804 hours 52 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1091 locks, averaging 1.48 lock/miles per hour.

Did two trips to Tesco's for shopping. Moored for lunch just after the locks.

Oxford Canal (Northern Section) to Grand Union Main Line

Stopped for water at the junction then moored before the toll house. Saw "Calm" on the way down. Another nice day with a misty sun in the afternoon.

Friday 13th October 1995

From Braunston Junction to Heyford Bridge No 32 arriving at 5:05 pm. The time taken was 7 hours 25 minutes. 12 miles and 13 locks, averaging 3.37 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 815 hours 2 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1104 locks, averaging 1.48 lock/miles per hour.

Bought some Elsan Blue at the Braunston chandlery but did not get any diesel as it as 1 a gallon. Had lunch on the move just before Buckby locks. Quite a lot of boats on the move today. Stopped at Stowe Hill Marina for diesel (74 litre at 17.6p = 13.02) and pumpout (10). Shortly afterwards we saw "Dourf II" moored and stopped for a chat for about 20 minutes. Moored for the night just before bridge 34. Another warm sunny day.

Saturday 14th October 1995

From Heyford Bridge No 32 to Rothersthorpe Lock No 12 arriving at 1:10 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 10 minutes. 6.37 miles and 12 locks, averaging 4.41 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 819 hours 12 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1116 locks, averaging 1.48 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped for water at Gayton junction then went down the locks. The pound below lock 2 was so low that we had to let some more water down to get through. A man opened the lock gate for me and said he had read "Tyro on the Trent". Stopped for lunch between locks 12 and 13.

From Rothersthorpe Lock No 12 to Northampton Lock No 1 arriving at 4:30 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 30 minutes. 3.62 miles and 6 locks, averaging 3.85 lock/miles per hour. Had trouble with a mass of weed round the prop as we came out of the bottom canal lock. Saw two Hotel Boats just before we got to the lock.Moored just after the lock, by the park. The day started with some fog that gradually cleared and produced some hazy sunshine in the afternoon.

Sunday 15th October 1995

From Northampton Lock No 1 to Cogenhoe Lock No 7 arriving at 12:30 am. The time taken was 2 hours 45 minutes. 5.87 miles and 6 locks, averaging 4.32 lock/miles per hour. Set off from Northampton just as the hotel boats were coming through the lock behind us but we did not see them again. Moored between two other narrowboats, just before the lock, for lunch.

From Cogenhoe Lock No 7 to Wellingborough Bridge arriving at 4:55 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 50 minutes. 6.62 miles and 6 locks, averaging 3.29 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 828 hours 17 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1134 locks, averaging 1.49 lock/miles per hour.

Moored by the park again. Saw a group of canoists at Doddington lock, they gave us a hand with the gates, and again shortly after we moored. It has been a warm sunny day with some cloudy intervals.

Monday 16th October 1995

From Wellingborough Bridge to Denford Lock No 21 arriving at 4:35 pm. The time taken was 5 hours 5 minutes. 12 miles and 8 locks, averaging 3.93 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 833 hours 22 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1142 locks, averaging 1.49 lock/miles per hour.

Went shopping at Tesco's in Wellingborough. When we got back to the boat another narrow boat had arrived and was using the water point so we had to wait to fill up. Set off and had lunch on the move. Moored just before the lock occasioning great interest for the cows. A fine day with sunshine and cloud, warm.

Tuesday 17th October 1995

From Denford Lock No 21 to Wadenhoe Lock No 24 arriving at 11:55 am. The time taken was 2 hours 55 minutes. 6.25 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.17 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 836 hours 17 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1145 locks, averaging 1.49 lock/miles per hour.

Moored for lunch just after the lock. Saw two knigfishers and several phesants this morning. There was quite a strong on-shore wind as we left the moorings after lunch.

From Wadenhoe Lock No 24 to Perio Lock No 30 arriving at 5:25 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 25 minutes. 9.75 miles and 6 locks, averaging 3.57 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 840 hours 42 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1151 locks, averaging 1.49 lock/miles per hour.

Saw several cormorants this afternoon. Moored at Fotheringhay (2) by the castle mound. A mostly cloudy day with a shower this morning and some stiff winds but a calm, sunny evening with another good sunset.

Wednesday 18th October 1995

From Perio Lock No 30 to Yarwell Lock No 33 arriving at 12:00 am. The time taken was 2 hours 35 minutes. 7 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.87 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 843 hours 17 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1154 locks, averaging 1.49 lock/miles per hour.

Saw a kingfisher just past Warmington lock. At Yarwell lock we met the boat we had seen at Wellingborough, they had been down to Ferry Meadows and were on the way back to Welton, onthe Leicester section. We moored below the lock and walked into the village and had a pate ploughman's at the Angel.

From Yarwell Lock No 33 to Orton Lock No 37 arriving at 5:15 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 15 minutes. 10.75 miles and 4 locks, averaging 4.54 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 846 hours 32 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1158 locks, averaging 1.49 lock/miles per hour.

At Wansford lock we met the family we had seen in the Angel at lunch time, they had driven from Melton Mobray. Moored aat Ferry Meadows. It has been a mostly sunny day with some cloud but a little cooler than of late.

Thursday 19th October 1995

From Orton Lock No 37 to Peterborough Bridge arriving at 10:35 am. The time taken was 1 hour 15 minutes. 2 miles and 0 locks, averaging 1.6 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 847 hours 47 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1158 locks, averaging 1.48 lock/miles per hour.

Set off from Ferry Meadows through Orton Lock and moored near the Key Theatre for shopping and lunch at the Deep Pan Pizza. After lunch filled with water and had a pumpout.

From Peterborough Bridge to Peterborough Junction arriving at 2:30 pm. The time taken was 15 minutes. 0.5 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 848 hours 2 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1158 locks, averaging 1.48 lock/miles per hour.

Arrived home. Water on moorings rather low and all our tyre fenders had disappeared. The day was cool at first but quite mild later.
