Tuesday 1th October 1996

From to Solomon's (or Cosgrove Ornamental) Bridge No 65 arriving at 11:40 am. The time taken was 50 minutes. 1.25 miles and 1 locks, averaging 2.7 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 787 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1110 locks, averaging 1.54 lock/miles per hour.

Started off at 10.05 and stopped for water just after Cosgrove Lock at 10.45 and met the man from Dutch. Had a long chat with him so we did not get off to move up to the visitor moorings until 11.30.

The time taken was 3 hours 10 minutes. 6.25 miles and 6 locks, averaging 3.87 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 790 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1116 locks, averaging 1.54 lock/miles per hour.

Shared the Stoke Bruerne Locks with a party of Germans on a Wyvern Shipping hire boat. Saw Greyhound (that we saw at Heyford). Went to the new Mansfield's pub, The Navigation, for dinner (Battered Haddock 5.95, Chicken Korma 5.50). A sunny morning and early afternoon, clouding over later.

Wednesday 2th October 1996

From Stoke Bruerne Top Lock No 14 to Gayton Junction arriving at 12:55 am. The time taken was 1 hour 15 minutes. 3.87 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.9 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 791 hours 25 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1117 locks, averaging 1.54 lock/miles per hour.

Took some pictures, bought 2 books at the canal museum and some groceries at the pub before leaving Stoke Bruerne. Moored for lunch just before the junction and moored by Griffin. The hotel boats Conwy and Caernarfon passed us there.

From Gayton Junction to Heyford Bridge No 32 arriving at 4:00 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 40 minutes. 4.87 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.92 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 793 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1117 locks, averaging 1.53 lock/miles per hour.

Moored just before the bridge. Went to the Olde Sun, in Nether Heyford, for dinner (Battered Cod 5.95, Minted Lamb Steak 6.25) a very good meal and an intereresting pub full of brass , copper and old artifacts. A mainly sunny day.

Thursday 3th October 1996

From Heyford Bridge No 32 to Whilton Bottom Lock No 13 arriving at 12:20 am. The time taken was 2 hours 0 minutes. 6 miles and 0 locks, averaging 3 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 795 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1117 locks, averaging 1.53 lock/miles per hour.

Did an oil and filter change before setting off. Saw Kelper again. Moored just before the lock for lunch.

From Whilton Bottom Lock No 13 to Buckby Top Lock No 7 arriving at 4:15 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 0 minutes. 1.25 miles and 6 locks, averaging 3.63 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 797 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1123 locks, averaging 1.53 lock/miles per hour.

Came up through the locks with a family from Norway on a Braunston Boats hire boat. Stopped at the top for water and then moored. A dull, cloudy day, but dry while we were cruising.

Friday 4th October 1996

From Buckby Top Lock No 7 to Braunston Bottom Lock No 1 arriving at 11:30 am. The time taken was 2 hours 30 minutes. 4 miles and 6 locks, averaging 4 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 799 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1129 locks, averaging 1.54 lock/miles per hour.

Went through the tunnel and went down the locks with a Rose hire boat. Called in at Braunston Boats to confirm arrangements and pick up our PARIS tickets. Did a little shopping in the village and had lunch at the Old Plough (Gammon, egg & pineapple 5.45 each).

From Braunston Bottom Lock No 1 to Brownsover Arm (disused) arriving at 4:20 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 40 minutes. 10.62 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.99 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 803 hours 15 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1133 locks, averaging 1.54 lock/miles per hour.

Near Braunston we saw a kingfisher several times as it repeatedly flew away from the boat then finally turned back, past us, on its way home. Turned at the entrance to the arm and backed into the mooring. The hotel boats Tzar and Tzarina were stopped there for shopping. A mostly sunny day but some cloud and showers, and a rainbow.

Saturday 5th October 1996

From Brownsover Arm (disused) to Hillmorton Top Locks Nos 6 and 7 arriving at 4:00 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 35 minutes. 2.87 miles and 3 locks, averaging 3.71 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 804 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1136 locks, averaging 1.54 lock/miles per hour.

Before setting off we did our shopping at Tesco then went into Rugby for a bag for Beryl's outfit and some other things. Had lunch at the Three Horseshoes Hotel (Roast Pork, Stuffing and veg 5.95 each). Saw a kingfisher on the way to Hillmorton. Moored a little way above the locks. A mostly sunny day with cloudy intervals.

Sunday 6th October 1996

From Hillmorton Top Locks Nos 6 and 7 to Braunston Bottom Lock No 1 arriving at 4:20 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 20 minutes. 7.75 miles and 1 locks, averaging 3.75 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 807 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1137 locks, averaging 1.53 lock/miles per hour.

Set off after lunch at 13.00 and got to the junction at 15.05. Filled with water then went round the turn and bought 21.5 gallons of diesel (21.50) from Ivor Batchalor on Mountbatten. Then into the Marina for a pumpout (5). Moored beside Buckingham at Braunston Boats. Midnight was up on the slipway. A cloudy day with rain in the morning but drry this afternoon.

Saturday 12th October 1996

From Braunston Bottom Lock No 1 to Weedon Station Bridge No 24 arriving at 6:40 pm. The time taken was 4 hours 40 minutes. 8.5 miles and 12 locks, averaging 4.39 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 811 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1149 locks, averaging 1.54 lock/miles per hour.

After returning from London and paying for the hull blackening (313.50) we had lunch and collected the new rear fender from Tradline. Went up most of the locks with Freedom, a Holiday Property Bond boat. Stopped for water at the top of the Buckby flight and went through the locks with a couple delivering a boat for a brokerage firm. Had dinner in the Heart of England (Plaice 5.95, Chicken, Ham and Mushroom Pie 5.45). A pleasant day, some sun, mostly cloudy in the afternoon.

Sunday 13th October 1996

From Weedon Station Bridge No 24 to Milton Road Bridge No 2, Gayton arriving at 12:15 am. The time taken was 2 hours 55 minutes. 7.75 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2.66 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 814 hours 45 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1149 locks, averaging 1.53 lock/miles per hour.

Stopped for water at Gayton Junction then moved on a little way for lunch. Saw Savoy Hill and Savoy Hill II.

From Milton Road Bridge No 2, Gayton to South Bridge, Northampton arriving at 4:45 pm. The time taken was 3 hours 50 minutes. 4.75 miles and 17 locks, averaging 5.67 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 818 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1166 locks, averaging 1.55 lock/miles per hour.

Came down the 17 locks to the Nene and moored just before the lock. A warm sunny day with a stiff breeze at times.

Monday 14th October 1996

From South Bridge, Northampton to Rush Mills Lock No 2 arriving at 1:25 pm. The time taken was 55 minutes. 1.75 miles and 2 locks, averaging 4.09 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 819 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1168 locks, averaging 1.55 lock/miles per hour.

Went into Northampton to get shopping at Sainsbury's. Stopped just after the lock for a pumpout but the machine there was so weak it couldn't suck a sherbert lemon. I also found that the drive belt on the front altanator had snapped so had to change that. Stopped on the landing stage below the lock for lunch, very brief as the Mountbatten Crusader arrived to go up through the lock.

From Rush Mills Lock No 2 to Billing Lock No 6 arriving at 3:55 pm. The time taken was 2 hours 0 minutes. 3 miles and 4 locks, averaging 3.5 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 821 hours 30 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1172 locks, averaging 1.55 lock/miles per hour.

Saw hundreds of Malards and Malard/Domestic cross breed ducks just beforre the lock.Moored in the marina outside the Billing Mill pub where we had dinner (Roquefort Turkey 5.25, Salmon En Croute 4.95). The new mooring there are very shallow and the landing stages are badly designed. A warm day, mostly sunny but clouding over in the afternoon.

Tuesday 15th October 1996

From Billing Lock No 6 to Wellingborough Bridge arriving at 12:20 am. The time taken was 3 hours 35 minutes. 8 miles and 7 locks, averaging 4.19 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 825 hours 5 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1179 locks, averaging 1.55 lock/miles per hour.

Shared all the locks with Peter & Hazel Baillie on Lochinvar. They stopped to shop at Tesco's and we went to the Cottage for lunch (Chcken & Mushroom Pie 2.45 each) and filled with water.

From Wellingborough Bridge to Irthlingborough Bridge arriving at 4:10 pm. The time taken was 1 hour 50 minutes. 5.25 miles and 3 locks, averaging 4.5 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 826 hours 55 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1182 locks, averaging 1.55 lock/miles per hour.

Carried on sharing locks with Lochinvar. Between Ditchford and Higham locks we saw hundreds of black balls floating on the water. Stopped on the new 48 hour moorings just before the lock. A mostly sunny day with a heavy shower just before lunch and a windy afternoon.

Wednesday 16th October 1996

From Irthlingborough Bridge to Ashton Lock No 28 arriving at 3:00 pm. The time taken was 6 hours 5 minutes. 18.87 miles and 12 locks, averaging 5.07 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 833 hours 0 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1194 locks, averaging 1.55 lock/miles per hour.

Continued down the Nene with Peter & Hazel, having lunch on the move. Saw several kingfishers. A sunny and windy day.

Thursday 17th October 1996

From Ashton Lock No 28 to Orton Lock No 37 arriving at 4:10 pm. The time taken was 7 hours 10 minutes. 21.62 miles and 9 locks, averaging 4.27 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 840 hours 10 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1203 locks, averaging 1.55 lock/miles per hour.

Saw several kingfishers, goldfinch, grey wagtail and lapwings; in addition to the usual Canada Geese, heron, moorhen, etc. Had lunch on the move and said farewell to Peter & Hazel at Wansford Lock. Moored in Thorpe Basin by the Boathouse pub where we had dinner (Cajian Chicken 5.95, Plaice 3.95). A mostly calm and sunny day.

Friday 18th October 1996

From Orton Lock No 37 to Peterborough Bridge arriving at 83:5 pm. The time taken was 25 minutes. 2 miles and 0 locks, averaging 4.8 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 840 hours 35 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1203 locks, averaging 1.55 lock/miles per hour.

Went down to the embankment in the rain and moored, Dutch was moored there. Did shopping in Asda and had a pumpout.

From Peterborough Bridge to Peterborough Junction arriving at 11:45 am. The time taken was 15 minutes. 0.5 miles and 0 locks, averaging 2 lock/miles per hour. Totals for this voyage are 840 hours 50 minutes. total cruising time, 100 miles and 1203 locks, averaging 1.55 lock/miles per hour.

Arrived home as the sun was breaking through. The end of our voyage for this year.
